How can I repair a porcelain kitchen sink
Hello, To give a short background to this question, my younger
sister had done some things to my home that l do not appreciate to this
day.One habit she had during a winter not long ago was pouring grease from
cooking bacon and burgers down the drain. The drain backed up solid and l
was stuck with the problem.l tried several boiling water techniques but
that did not reach the lodged fat in my pipes.Eventually l went to the
local hardware store to ask a 'professional' on how to clear a clog.l explained to him all of my concerns including that the sink was a porous porcelain sink. The man stated that this cleaner, whatever it was, will not be an issue, it will do no harm and clear your drain.Supposedly it was much more dense than water so it will sink down into the pipe and clear the clog with ease.l gave it a shot for my 20 dollars or so.After a few hours of waiting around for this junk to do it is job l started to come to the conclusion that this stuff is not going to cut it.l put a hose into the filled sink and drained the fluid to find that the sink is porcelain was pretty well eaten away. l called in a plumber and he cleared the drain by cutting some of the pipe and getting it out himself. That stuff sprayed all over the floor as well, bleh what a mess.Anyway, this was a year ago or so.So now l wanna fix this wonderful porcelain sink back to it is original beauty.l have only started looking recently and l thought that perhaps some expert here or someone with experience in this matter may already have an answer that l desire.l found http://porc-a-fix.net/ This website that may have products for DIY, l like DIY but l am not sure how far their products or anyones products will go as it is a lot of porcelain.l feel like l am almost rebuilding about half of the entire sink is finish.I'd take a photo for reference but my kitten knocked my camera tri-pod over with the camera on it, upon it is landing it came down right on the face where the lens was extended and that broke it good. />Thank you.
From my experience any of the over the counter products are
only temporary solutions. They are only good if you want to dress-up
something for a sale or rental & dont care about the finish lasting very
long. Their are pros that re-finish tubs & sinks & they use commercial
products that most of us cant get or use. The stuff they use is toxic &
will leave an awful stink in ur house for a few days. I have tried a few
diffirent guys for re-finishing tubs in my rentals but have not seen a tub hold up for more then 5 years. It might be worth finding a guy that does it to take a look & give you his opinion--then compare to the cost of replacing the sink.
Yes they make a kit to refinish your sinks and tubs, BUT it is
very toxic and you need ultimate ventilation. The end job is not that
great. There are companies that will come out and refinish it for you but
they charge a pretty penny. You could go to craigslist.com and look in the
FREE section of your city. People are always giving away stuff like that
because they are redoing their kitchens.
buy a new one, cant really repair that, it will look like junk
